`Do you share photos of your food on social media — also known as "foodstagramming"? A recent survey found that 44% of people say they often share pictures of their food online. But did you know that many people don't even eat the food they post?

According to a survey of 2,000 people by OnePoll, 40% said they had shared pictures of food they did not eat — and 19% said they never planned to eat the food at all.

Nearly six in 10 people also said they had stopped a friend from starting their meal or had a friend stop them from eating, from taking a photo before the first bite. And 57% said they would move their plate or rearrange their food to get the best picture.

This "camera eats first" behavior is most often seen in millennials — people born between 1981 and 1999. Sixty-nine percent of them take photos or videos of their food before eating it, according to a 2017 survey by research company Maru/Matchbox.

Sharing photos can also affect what other people eat. In the OnePoll survey, 85% of people said they wanted to eat food they've seen on social media — and many even said they use it to search for new recipes.

Food magazine Chef's Pencil looked at the most popular foods on Instagram in February 2021. It found that the top 10 foods included cake, chocolate, pizza, ice cream, cookies, burgers — and salad.
