Jakarta, which is the capital of Indonesia, is at risk of sinking. A recent report by environmentalist groups says that the city may be completely underwater by 2050. With almost 10 million residents, Jakarta is one of the world's most crowded cities.

With half of Jakarta already below sea level, Jakarta is currently sinking at a rate of 10 cm yearly. What's more alarming is the rich northern region of the city, which is home to modern structures and high-rises, has sunk by 2.5 meters during the past ten years.

The 13 rivers that go through the Indonesian capital lead to its sinking. Flooding occurs frequently during the monsoon season due to intense rainfall.

A part of the problem is caused by humans in addition to natural causes. For its growing population, the city does not have enough water supply. Only around 40% of the city's demand for clean water can be met by the authorities. A lot of individuals use groundwater for drinking and other uses. The land above the groundwater sinks as a result.

Similar to many cities in the Third World, the infrastructure cannot support the increasing population. For the city's water supply, there are not enough pipes or sewers. If the city keeps sinking, Indonesian officials are now thinking about evacuating and relocating millions of people.

The problem in Jakarta is also partially caused by global warming. More and more water is being pushed into the city due to rising ocean levels. To prevent ocean water from entering the city, plans are being made to build a sea wall.
