The company claims it will employ new methods to identify and block users who attempt to host a party using Airbnb's short-term rental service. The business claimed to have developed technology that looks at the prospective tenant's history on Airbnb, the distance between their current location and the rental property, whether they plan to stay for a weekday or a weekend, and other things.
According to Airbnb, the screening process it is implementing for listings in the US and Canada has been tested since last October in some Australian regions, where it led to a 35% decrease in unregistered parties. The San Francisco-based company said that the technology is intended to stop a customer's reservation request from ever getting to the host of the relevant property. People who cannot rent a full home may be able to reserve a single room instead because the host is more likely to be present, according to Airbnb.
Since a Halloween house party in a neighborhood of San Francisco culminated in a shooting that left five people dead in 2019, Airbnb has come under increasing pressure to crack down on parties. The year after, Airbnb established a global ban on parties at its listings and a requirement that anybody under 25 rent a whole property nearby only if they had a history of favorable reviews on the website. Initially intended as a temporary public health measure for the duration of the pandemic, the party ban was made permanent in June.
