Flood is the second most common natural calamity after the fire. They nearly always happen and cause tremendous harm and sometimes even deaths. Flooding can be brought on by a variety of factors, including human error and extremely deep snow cover. As a result, experts have spent a lot of time trying to improve flood forecasting. Currently, they can only identify the potential for floods under specific circumstances.

When deep snow melts, a lot of water is released. Even though deep snow by itself hardly ever results in flooding, it can lead to serious flooding when accompanied by intense rain and abruptly warmer weather. In addition, ice-covered rivers can cause floods. They can build a dam in the river, which will raise the water level behind it and flood the area upstream.  Broken ice dams are not the only dam problems that can cause flooding. The effects of a major human-made dam failing to hold the water collected behind it or breaking can be disastrous.

Even though scientists can't always forecast with absolute certainty when a flood will happen, they do know a lot about when one is likely to happen. Strong indicators of possible flooding include deep snow, ice-covered rivers, and frail dams. We may hopefully lessen the harm that floods cause by understanding why they occur.
