A dog is a man's (and a woman's) best friend, according to an English saying. For thousands of years, dogs and humans have shared intimate, loving interactions. The relationship between humans and dogs, according to scientists, is stronger than initially believed. The scientists concluded that when dogs reunite with their owners after a separation, they shed happy tears. 22 dogs were used in a study conducted by scientists to evaluate their behavior. They focused on the dogs' reactions when they were reunited with their owners and other humans they interacted with often. According to the scientists, the dogs began to cry when they recognized their owners.

The researchers from Jichi Medical University and Azabu University covered the dogs’ eyes with paper strips. They then observed when and if the dogs cried. The researchers discovered that the dogs wept when the humans and dogs were reunited after being apart for five to seven hours. Takefumi Kikusui, a researcher, said, "We had never heard of the discovery that animals shed tears in joyful situations, such as reuniting with their owners." He added, "Their tears might play a role in the deepening of mutual relationships."  He said, "It's possible that dogs who show teary eyes during human interaction would have cared for more."
