A Canadian family asked themselves that question after three of their four children were found to have a rare eye condition. Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier discovered that their children Mia, Colin, and Laurent had retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that causes people to go blind. It currently has no cure.

`They took advice from a specialist, who told them to give the children "visual memories."

"She said to show them giraffes and elephants. She meant books, but we figured why not just see the real thing?” Lemay told The Guardian. So they did.

The family began saving for a year-long world tour and planned to leave Canada in 2020. But they had to wait until March 2022 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The children are now aged between 5 and 12; 9-year-old Leo does not have the condition.

People with retinitis pigmentosa find that their eyesight gets worse as they get older. They often lose almost all of their eyesight by age 40. Lemay and Pelletier wanted to fill their children's minds with bright, interesting memories.

They first visited Namibia, where they saw those giraffes and elephants — before moving on to Zambia, Tanzania, Turkey, Mongolia, and Indonesia.

The French-speaking family has been sharing its experiences on Facebook and Instagram. The name of their pages translates as: "The world in their eyes."
