Scientists have been growing blood in laboratories for several years — that's right, it's possible to grow blood. And now, researchers in the UK have put some of that lab-grown blood into people in clinical trials. They say it's the first time this has been done anywhere in the world. The researchers want to find out how long and how well this lab-grown blood can live in the body.

If the trials are successful, this blood could be helpful for people with illnesses that mean they often need to have blood transfusions. It could also mean these people don't need to have transfusions as often. And it could also help people who have unusual blood types. For these people, it can be difficult to find donors, but lab-grown blood could make things easier.

In the first part of the trial, announced on November 7, 2022, two volunteers were given a small amount of lab-grown blood.

Over several months, the researchers will be able to see how long it lasts in the body by using a safe radioactive substance that they put in with the blood.

The lab-grown blood comes from donors. Scientists can find and take out the blood's stem cells — special cells that can become different types of cells — and then grow them in the laboratory to make red blood cells.

Announcing the trials, the UK's National Health Service reported that the first two volunteers — there will be at least 10 in total — had not yet felt any negative effects from their transfusions.
