A court has ordered Lidl to stop selling its chocolate bunnies in Switzerland, putting an end to a four-year court case that was started by the chocolate manufacturer Lindt. Lindt's chocolate bunnies, which were first introduced in 1952 and are known all over the world, are wrapped in gold foil and have red ribbons and bells around their necks. The similarities were therefore noted when cheap retailer Lidl introduced their Favorina chocolate bunny, which was likewise wrapped in gold foil and had a gold bell but a green ribbon.

In 2018, Lindt, which had copyrighted the design of its chocolate bunny in 2001, filed a lawsuit against Lidl because the latter's chocolate bunnies might be mistaken for Lindt's. Additionally, Lindt provided polls demonstrating that people were familiar with its bunnies. Switzerland's Federal Supreme Court ruled in September 2022 that despite their modest differences, the two items may be easily misconstrued.

Lidl was ordered to stop selling its bunnies and to get rid of any existing stock. The chocolate itself need not be destroyed, it was added; it might even be put to good use. However, Lidl asserted that no stock needs to be destroyed because their chocolate rabbit is only sold during specific times of the year. Lindt produces about 150 million chocolate bunnies annually, which are distributed in more than 50 countries, according to the business website.
