Anyone unfamiliar with nanotechnology should start with geckos. These lizards are among the finest climbers in the entire animal kingdom. You notice that spiderman should have been named gecko man as you watch them move along a horizontal piece of glass upside down. These guys can climb higher than spiders at any time.
Each toe possesses over two million microscopic hairs on its underside, which may be seen under a microscope. Each of these hairs is shown to break into hundreds of even smaller nano-hairs, or "spatulae," under the higher magnification of an electron microscope. For more than 15 years, scientists have been trying to figure out what makes gecko toes so sticky and how to create nano hairs with the same structure.
The area of research presently referred to as nanotechnology includes projects like this one. The technologies being developed in this area can be measured in a few nanometers. Richard Feynman was largely responsible for igniting interest in this level of technology development at the beginning of the 1960s, but Dr. Eric Drexler, who spurred scientists through a series of speeches and a book titled "Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology," coined the term "nano" in the 1990s.
