Saffron is used in cooking all around the world, especially in Europe, the Middle East, and India. It made a beautiful, vivid clothing dye and was used as perfume by the Ancient Greeks and Romans. It's also one of the priciest spices in the entire world. Saffron can cost up to $3,000 per kilogram, according to Business Insider. The high cost of saffron is caused by several causes. First of all, it is challenging to grow and can only be done in a few locations around the world.

The purple flower known as Crocus sativus has saffron threads in its core, which are used to make the spice. These saffron threads must be harvested by hand, which is laborious and time-consuming due to how delicate they are. Since there are only three saffron threads in each flower, up to 150,000 flowers may be required to produce one kilogram of saffron.

Saffron has consistently been in high demand, and in the 14th century, it even caused a small war. The aristocracy was unhappy at the time because saffron was making European merchants exceedingly wealthy and influential. As a result, aristocrats stole a ship carrying more than 360 pounds of saffron that was headed to Basel, Switzerland, to stop them. Because of this, merchants fought for three months in the "Saffron War" to reclaim their ships.
