A rare pink diamond was sold for 49.9 million dollars in Hong Kong, setting a record for the highest price paid per carat for a diamond sold at auction.

With an initial estimate of 21 million dollars, The 11.15-carat Williamson Pink Star diamond was auctioned by Sotheby's Hong Kong. Its name is derived from two fabled pink diamonds and it was the second-largest pink diamond to be offered for sale. The 23.60-carat Williamson diamond is the first one; it was given to Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding present in 1947. The second diamond is the 59.60-carat Pink Star diamond, which set a record when it was auctioned off in 2017 for $71.2 million.

Among the colored diamonds, pink diamonds are among the rarest and most extortionate. Less than 3% of all diamonds are categorized as colored diamonds, and less than 5% of those are thought to be predominantly pink. A pink diamond rarely weighs over 10 carats.
