A celestial event known as conjunction caused five of the largest planets in our solar system to line up in a row. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn could all be seen with the naked eye from various regions of the globe (without the need for a telescope). Clear skies before dawn allowed for visibility of the unprecedented planetary conjunction. According to the AccuWeather website, an hour or so before sunrise was the ideal time to see this phenomenon. Professor Lucie Green, an astronomer, compared the phenomenon to "a string of pearls spread out from close to the horizon." Professor Green was very pleased to see Mercury because it is typically difficult to view. “It is extremely satisfying to observe this small blinking planet”, she said.

According to AccuWeather, a conjunction in this order won't be visible from Earth again for another 20 years. August 2040 is when it will happen again. The planets were believed to have appeared in the sequence they are positioned from the sun, with Saturn being the farthest away and Mercury being the closest, making this planetary occurrence unique. Dr. Diana Hannikainen, another astronomer, noted that the conjunction was notable because a crescent moon was present alongside the five planets. She stated the alignment was a "delightful sight". The conjunction is rare because the five planets all have different orbits of the sun. Saturn takes 29 years to complete one orbit of the sun while Mercury takes 88 days.
