Adults typically require seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Are you getting enough, or are you perhaps building up "sleep debt"? The Sleep Foundation defines sleep debt as the discrepancy between how much sleep you obtain and how much you need. Therefore, if you only receive six hours each night while your body requires nine, you have three hours of sleep debt.
Sleep debt is just like regular debt that can accumulate. Therefore, even if you sleep for just 30 minutes later each night for a few days, the difference will accrete quickly. To make up for lost sleep, many people try to sleep on the weekends. However, it needs to be clarified if those additional hours are helpful. The extra sleep could even deceive you into thinking you've recovered when you still have sleep debt to make up.
According to a study from 2016, recovering from only 60 minutes of agitated sleep might take up to four days. What can you do, then, to pay off your sleep debt? First, even on weekends, the Sleep Foundation advises attempting to go to bed and wake up at the same times every day. Additionally, it aids in preventing sleep debt altogether. You might also try gradually lengthening your sleep by 15 to 30 minutes each night until you achieve the ideal level. If your job makes it difficult for you to sleep at night, afternoon naps may also be helpful. You might be able to identify trends that are undermining your sleep by keeping a sleep diary. And if you need help, you should talk to your doctor.
