A spiky image of a distant star that has been photobombed by hundreds of old galaxies has been captured by NASA's new space telescope as it has peered into the extreme reaches of the universe. The James Webb Space Telescope's image from Wednesday was a test shot, not an actual scientific observation, to examine how its 18 hexagonal mirrors collaborated to take a single coordinated image from 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) away from Earth. It performed better than predicted, according to officials.
Last month, NASA used 18 different photos taken from its mirror segments to study a much closer star. The arrival of the newest test photos reportedly made scientists excited. A star 2,000 lightyears away that is 100 times fainter than what the human eye can see was the target of NASA's test photograph. Nearly 6 trillion miles separate one light year (9.7 trillion kilometers).
The dazzling star appeared more red and spiky thanks to the design of Webb's mirrors and their filters, but the background stole the show. They are several billion-year-old galaxies. Webb will eventually be able to look so far into the future and back in time that, as she put it, it will only be "a few hundred million years after the Big Bang." Till late June or early July, the first scientific photographs won't be available. The nearly 32-year-old Hubble Space Telescope was replaced by the $10 billion Webb, which launched from South America in December and arrived at its destination in January.
