Many people's conception of typical university life may include spending more time online, sleeping less, and skipping classes. But before the coronavirus epidemic, research from Japan revealed a connection between those factors and sadness. Unhappy university students utilized the internet more frequently than cheerful ones, according to a Japanese study of young people. Additionally, skipping more school and getting worse sleep were linked to unhappiness.

Over 1,200 young people were surveyed by researchers at five universities in Japan. They questioned them about their happiness, use of the internet, sleep, and attendance at school. Students were divided into two groups based on their responses: a "high happiness" group and a "low happiness" group. In contrast to the roughly 53% of male participants, less than 43% of female participants were in the low-happiness group.

The students in the low happiness group were 12% more likely to have skipped a day of school and 13% more likely to have arrived late for class, the researchers discovered when they compared the groups. Although there wasn't always less sleep, students in this group stated that the quality of their sleep was roughly 24% lower than students in the high-happy group. The authors suggested that it could be beneficial to examine whether there is a relationship between happiness and the kind of internet information people access.
