There was a period in the late 20th century when some people thought that coffee might surpass tea as Britain's favorite beverage. In reality, that has not occurred, as tea continues to hold its position as the country's favorite beverage, making up more than half of all alcoholic beverages drunk in the country (excluding water).

To say that the British enjoy their tea would be an understatement. Tea is more than just a pleasure; it is a necessity for everyone, from the Royal Family to the poorest of the homeless and unemployed. It is one of those characteristics that set British living apart from other cultures.

Around 1800, the 7th Duchess of Bedford established "afternoon tea," a tradition that takes place at around four o'clock. Up until that point, most people skipped lunch and dinner entirely.

During the nineteenth century, tea became much more affordable, which helped to extend its popularity throughout British society. Eventually, tea had become the country's favorite beverage. In working-class households, it was served with the main meal of the day, eaten when workers returned home after a day's labor.

Today, tea can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Due to more people staying at home all day in 2020 during the COVID lockdowns, tea consumption in Britain increased by 50%.
