Australia is the smallest continent in the world, with a total land area of approximately 7.692 million square kilometers. Australia is the sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America, and Brazil, making up only 5% of the planet's land mass. Of the six major countries, it is the only one that is entirely encompassed by water.

The world's lowest, flattest, and the driest continent is Australia. The climatic regions of Australia include deserts, cool-temperature woods, tropical rainforests, and mountains covered in snow. Nearly 20 percent of Australia’s land mass is classified as desert. Within this climate, plants and animals have evolved on a geographically secluded continent, through a time of slow aridity, combined with continuing high variability.

Thousands of small islands and countless larger ones encompass the mainland and Tasmania. Island coasts make up nearly 40% of the total littoral length. Like other island nations, the frontiers of the United States, territories, and countries are largely determined by their littorals.
