The basic bicycle was invented several years after the railroad locomotive. However, since Kirkpatrick MacMillan, a Scottish blacksmith designed the two-wheeler in 1839, it has come a long way. A "hobby horse," an antique wheeled vehicle, served as the concept for MacMillan's bicycle. This was a two-wheeled wooden horse. Due to its lack of steering and brakes, it was neither a quick nor a safe vehicle.

The hobby horse, also known as Mad Pate, was redesigned by MacMillan, who added a system of articulated bars. With his feet, the rider could move the bars back and forth and turn the back wheel. In his day, Mad Pate went unnoticed, but bicycle interest grew among others. The first bicycle with rotating pedals was created and patented 25 years later by a Frenchman by the name of Pierre Lallemant. In addition, H.J. Lawson introduced the essential "chain-drive" element in 1876. Since then, additional features like rubber tires and gears have been developed, but the basic bicycle has not changed.

Since then, the bicycle has been a huge success. Especially in emerging nations, it is currently one of the most popular modes of transportation worldwide. Because it is non-polluting and simple to use, it has a bright future as the standard method of transportation for cities.
