On Wednesday, Wimbledon organizers announced that Russian and Belarusian tennis players couldn’t play at this year’s event.

The organizers said there was no reason for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Russia couldn’t get any benefits from the players taking part at Wimbledon. It was the first time in a long time that the organizers banned players. This happened last after World War II for German and Japanese players.

This decision affected Daniel Medvedev, the Russian US Open champion and current men’s world number two. Other affected players were the men’s world number eight Andrey Rublev of Russia, the women’s number four Aryna Sabalenka, and number sixteen Victoria Azarenka, both of Belarus.
