The most expensive automobile ever sold by Mercedes-Benz cost almost $144 million. The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé was bought by British car connoisseur Simon Kidston at an RM Sotheby's auction on behalf of an anonymous collector. The automobile has the name of its designer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, and is one of just two produced by the Mercedes-Benz racing division.

In the 1930s and 1950s, Uhlenhaut created many well-known racing vehicles for Mercedes-Benz and was renowned for being able to outrun professional racers in them. The Uhlenhaut Coupé, which was Uhlenhaut's company car and was based on one of his racing car designs, has a top speed of about 290 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest cars that could be driven on public roads at the time it was built. The unidentified car's buyer has consented to display the car to the public at special events. It is one of the top ten most expensive things ever sold at auction, according to RM Sotheby's. Nobody anticipated that Mercedes would ever sell the vehicle, according to Peter Wallman of RM Sotheby's.

Since the car was built, Mercedes-Benz has owned it, and the company also holds ownership of the only other model. Since he only designed and drove them, Uhlenhaut never owned either vehicle. The most expensive vehicle ever sold until Mercedes sold this vehicle was a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, which WeatherTech CEO David MacNeil purchased in 2018 for $70 million.
