Adjective (superlative)

Look at the following sentences:

John is always the earliest to work. 

Dogs are the friendliest animals on earth. 

That is the prettiest bracelet I have ever seen. 

The elephant is the heaviest animal in the zoo. 

That building is the tallest in the neighborhood. 

Bigger and more expensive are comparative adjectives. We form them like this: 

SHORT ADJECTIVES (one syllable):

Old - the oldest 

Short - the shortest 

Nice - the nicest 

Fat - the fattest 

Big - the biggest

Subject + am/is/are/was/were + THE + superlative adjective (-est)

For example

Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system. 

She is the smartest girl in our class. 

This is the longest article I have ever read. 

I am the shortest person in my family.

LONG ADJECTIVES (one syllable):

Interesting - the most interesting

Popular - the most popular

Difficult - the most difficult

Careful - the most careful

Wonderful - the most wonderful

For example

This is the most interesting book I have ever bought. 

He is the most handsome boy in the whole university.

Happy - the happiest 

Hungry - the hungriest 

Ugly - the ugliest 

Pretty - the prettiest

IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES:

Good - the best

Bad - the worst 

Little - the least 

Far - the furthest/farthest

For example

Today is the worst day ever.
