Position of adverbs

1. INITIAL POSITION:
Adverbs can be placed at the beginning of a sentence for emphasis. This position is more common in written or formal English.
- Suddenly, the car screeched to a halt.
- Unfortunately, I can't attend the meeting.
2. MID-POSITION:
Adverbs are often placed in the middle of the sentence, usually after the auxiliary verbs or modal verbs and before the main verb.
- She will quickly finish her work.
- He has always been supportive.
- They can easily solve this problem.
However, if the verb is in a simple tense (no auxiliary or modal verbs), the adverb usually comes before the verb.
- She quickly finishes her work.
3. END POSITION:
This is the most common position for adverbs. They are placed at the end of the sentence.
- She finished her work quickly.
- He spoke fluently.
Adverbs of frequency (always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never) and adverbs of certainty (definitely, certainly, maybe) are usually placed at the end.
- She goes to the gym often.
- He will definitely come to the party.
4. Between Subject and Verb:
Some adverbs can be placed between the subject and the main verb.
- I often go to the park.
- He always speaks the truth.
5. Adverbs of Manner and Degree:
Adverbs of manner (quickly, slowly, well) and adverbs of degree (very, too, quite) tend to come before the main verb, after the auxiliary verb or modal verb.
- She sings beautifully.
- He is very talented.
6. Adverbs of Frequency and Time:
Adverbs of frequency and time usually come before the main verb (after auxiliary verbs or modal verbs).
- They usually arrive on time.
- She often visits her grandparents.
7. Adverbs in Questions:
In questions, adverbs often come after the auxiliary verb.
- Have you ever been to Paris?
- Will he come to the party?
