SOME / ANY

SOME

We use some with positive sentences with both countable and uncountable nouns. 

For example, 

I have some apples in the fridge. 

There is some rice in the container.

We use some in questions when asking for things and offering things. 

For example, 

Would you like some wine?  

Can I have some eggs, please?

ANY

We use any with negative sentences with both countable and uncountable nouns. 

For example, 

I haven’t got any apples in the fridge. 

There isn’t any rice in the container. 

We use any with both countable and uncountable nouns in questions. 

For example, 

Are there any potatoes left? 

Is there any water? 

For example, 

Some books are better than others. 

There is some fresh air in the main city. 

Would you like some orange juice? 

Could I have some cookies? 

I don’t want any of these clothes. 

Do you have any siblings? 

There aren’t any candies in the jar. 

A LOT OF / MUCH / MANY:

A LOT OF

We use a lot of in positive and negative sentences and in questions, with both countable and uncountable nouns.   

For example, 

I have a lot of money. 

Can you hurry up? I don’t have a lot of time.

MUCH

We use much in negative sentences and questions, with uncountable nouns. 

For example, 

I don’t eat much sugar. 

Don't you eat much sugar? 

Note: A lot of can also be used in these cases. 

MANY

We use many in negative and positive sentences and questions with countable nouns. 

For example, 

I don’t eat many apples. 

Do you have many books in your room?

For example, 

I drink a lot of coffee every day.  

We don’t have a lot of friends here. 

I don’t drink much coffee. 

Do you have many friends? 

Were there many people on the train? 

I am not so hungry so I didn’t eat much.
