A PHRASAL VERB is a special kind of verb that consists of a verb (come/go/look etc.) + preposition or adverb (in/out/up/down/away etc.)
Here are some examples of common phrasal verbs:
IN
I waited outside the store. I didn’t go in.
John opened the door of the car and got in.
OUT
I went to the window of the store and looked out.
The car stopped and a man got out.
ON
We have to get on the bus at the bus stop.
I missed getting on the bus earlier.
OFF
The horse is running so fast when the man fell off.
My sunglasses fell off and broke on the sidewalk.
UP
The children stood up and left the classroom.
What time do you get up every morning?
We looked up at the birds flying in the sky.
DOWN
Would you like to sit down?
The picture frames on the wall fell down.
She is lying down on the bed.
AWAY or OFF
The man who stole my bag ran away before the policeman arrived. (or… ran off)
The man got into the car so mad and drove away.
I will be away for a few weeks.
BACK
Please come back at 5 PM.
We went back to our room after having dinner.
I will be back in a few hours.
