One of the youngest university graduates in the history of the globe will soon be a 13-year-old boy. This year, Minnesota native Elliott Tanner will complete his bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics at the University of Minnesota. Before becoming 14 years old, he was already credited into the university's Ph.D. program in physics.
According to his mother Michelle, Tanner reportedly started reading and doing arithmetic when he was three. He began college courses at age 9 after spending a few years being homeschooled and completing a high school program at just 8. Tanner stated that pursuing his physics degree has been one of his "favorite things to do" and that he aspires to work as a physicist and lecturer of physics at the University of Minnesota in the future.
The teen is just one of several young students who completed their degrees before turning 18 years old. Michael Kearney, who earned an anthropology degree from the University of South Alabama in 1994 at the age of 10, holds the Guinness World Record for being the youngest college graduate. But Tanner's mother has learned while working to find a means to pay for her son to pursue his Ph.D. that studying for a degree at a young age can also come with difficulties.
The family has been seeking scholarships and other forms of financial aid, but Michelle told The Associated Press that they have not yet been triumphant. Elliott's Ph.D., however, is being funded through a GoFundMe, and over $39,000 has been given so far.
