A woman has given birth to a baby boy during an 11-hour flight from Accra, Ghana, to Washington, DC.

The woman went into labor about six hours into United Airlines Flight 997, and the baby was born about two hours before the plane landed.

The flight arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport on the morning of January 30, where it was met by emergency medical services.

United Airlines said its staff was "amazing" and worked quickly to make sure everyone was safe during the birth. A member of the flight crew used to be a nurse and was able to help another nurse and doctor who were passengers on the plane.

Dr. Stephen Ansah-Addo, a Ghanaian doctor who works in the US, made himself available when the pilot asked if anyone on the flight could help.

Tiani Warren from LA was on the flight and told CNN that the woman — who has not been named — gave birth in the row of seats behind her in business class.

Warren also said that even though the woman was making a lot of noise, "half the people on the plane didn't know what was going on." She added that the situation was made more difficult when the plane experienced turbulence.

Ghanaian talk show host Nancy Adobe Anane was also on the flight and shared a video of the mother and new baby on her Facebook page. In the video, the mother says, "Thank you so much to the crew, the doctor, the nurse — I appreciate it."

According to Anane, the baby boy was not yet due.
