Four London bridges were blocked by climate change demonstrators on Friday, while other campaigners carried on weeks' worth of rallies against oil ports throughout Britain. As hundreds of Extinction Rebellion demonstrators occupied London's Waterloo, Blackfriars, Lambeth, and Westminster bridges to demand an end to new fossil fuel investments, cars and red double-decker buses backed up along highways. "Pockets of protest," according to the Metropolitan Police, were generating delays and commotion around central London.

The protests are a part of a growing movement for climate action, which has also seen Insulate Britain block motorways and roads to urge demands that the government provides funding for more energy-efficient homes. The Conservative government has responded by introducing steps to stop disruptive protests, which has generated discussion over free expression. The administration commended oil corporations on Friday for getting court orders to disperse protesters who had been obstructing oil terminals.

Throughout the past two weeks, more than 600 people have been detained after environmental activists at oil depots all over the United Kingdom scaled oil tankers, padlocked themselves to buildings, and blocked roadways. Extinction Rebellion-affiliated organization Just Stop Oil is pleading with the government to halt all new oil and gas projects. Despite the injunctions, protests persisted on Friday at locations in southeast and central England, leading to numerous arrests.
