The lights on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France will be turned off several hours earlier than usual to conserve electricity. The Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world, and it is currently covered with an elaborate lighting system until one in the morning to give it a golden glow. In addition, 20,000 flashing bulbs make the monument twinkle for about five minutes every hour starting from nightfall. When the final tourists leave at 11:45 p.m., the Paris city hall suggests that the tower go black so that it won't twinkle at midnight.

The change is due to the present energy crisis, which serves as an illustration of the reduction in city lights. The night lights take 4% of the energy which the tower uses in one year. To conserve energy in winter, the city hall plans to reduce the temperature of the water in public pools and postpone heating public buildings.
