Mexican divers made one of the largest underwater discoveries in history when they found a flooded cave close to the beach resort of Tulum on the Yucatan peninsula. The cave is part of the Sac Actun cave system which has a total length of 347 km.

The discovery was made by members of Gran Acuifero Mayaa, a  project dedicated to the investigation and preservation of underground water systems in Yucatan. Divers discovered an underwater connection between two existing caverns after a few months of exploration. Divers who examined the flooded area discovered tomb sites, old writings on rocks and stones, and human bone remains.

The flooded cave might be connected to the earliest Maya civilization and could provide information about Mayan culture. There are numerous monuments and historic Mayan sites on the Yucatan peninsula.

The Mayans built their towns and temples over sinkholes. They were natural holes made when limestone collapsed in and exposed underground waterways.
