The Ford Motor Company plans to invest over $11 billion in the creation and production of electric vehicles. The Detroit Motor Show is where the news was made public.

The American carmaker aims to have 24 hybrid vehicles and 16 all-electric vehicles on the road. The only Ford vehicle that can currently be entirely driven on batteries is the Focus.

Ford plans to increase sales in China, the world's fastest-growing car market, and create electric vehicles for the North American market. Also, it aims to be the market leader for fuel-efficient trucks. The company also intends to release a battery-powered SUV.

Ford prefers to transform existing models rather than create whole new electric cars from scratch since buyers will be more informed and able to make easier purchases.

The development of electric vehicles is being pushed by many major nations, including China, India, France, and the United Kingdom which have declared that they would phase out internal combustion engine-powered vehicles within the next two decades. Also, they try to compete with businesses like Tesla, a manufacturer of cars that specializes in innovative technologies.

Automakers may find it easier to produce electric cars with higher mileage and at lower prices as battery costs are dropping quickly.
