Northern Europe still has a few residents who believe that global warming may not be as terrible as it seems. Many people in Britain would prefer the concept of it growing a little hotter because summer there sometimes seems to endure just a few weeks. Unfortunately, it seems like it is more challenging than it looks. Global warming refers to more than just a gradual increase in global temperature. Paradoxically, it might make some places much colder. According to the most recent forecasts, northern Europe might see an ice age. While Greece and other parts of south-eastern Europe would continue to experience hotter and drier conditions, Britain would find itself encircled by sea ice at least during the winter.
The reason for this concerns the Greenland ice sheet. One of the largest ice sheets in the world, it is about 1,500 km long and 600 km wide. Because of its size, the water level would rise by 7 meters if it completely melted. This ice sheet is melting at an alarming rate due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels. But how is it possible that the Greenland ice sheet melting might trigger a new ice age in northern Europe?
Because they have noticed that the water coming from the melting Greenland ice sheet is pouring into the course of the Gulf Stream, scientists are starting to make bleak predictions of an impending ice age in the northern hemisphere. The melted ice's water will lessen the density of the Gulf Stream's water, preventing it from sinking in the north and cutting off the deep southerly current, which will limit the flow of warmer water northward. The seas surrounding Britain will then start to freeze.
