Based on a human fossil discovered in Israel in 2002, humans may have left Africa up to 100,000 years earlier than originally believed. An upper jawbone and stone tools found in an Israeli cave were the subject of a one and half decade of investigation.

Teeth that were discovered in the jawbone were estimated to be between 170,000 and 190,000 years old. A 3D model was created with the use of CT scans, which were then compared to other fossils from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

The tools found nearby show that prehistoric people were busy creating numerous items they used for gathering and hunting. While some scientists claim that only homo sapiens could have created the tools, others do not deny the possibility that Neanderthals could also have made them.

The oldest fossils found outside of Africa were also located in Israel. They were no older than 90,000 to 120,000 years, according to archaeologists.

The new finding also sets back the date of Homo sapiens' arrival in Africa. We now think that they first appeared between 300,000 and 500,000 years ago, rather than 200,000 years ago as the current theory claims. If so, they may have traveled briefly from Africa to other continents as early as 200,000 years ago.
