Nintendo's profit increased 28% year over year in the April to June quarter thanks to strong game demand, even if a scarcity of chips hampered console sales. The Japanese video game developer behind the Super Mario and Pokemon series reported a profit of 118.9 billion yen ($895 million) in the most recent quarter, up from 92.7 billion yen at the same time in 2021. According to Kyoto-based Nintendo Co., quarterly sales decreased by 4.7% to 307.4 billion yen ($2.3 billion).
Shortage of supplies of the processors that power the majority of modern electronics have harmed other firms, including Sony Group Corp., other game developers, and automakers like Toyota Motor Corp. While the pandemic is mostly to blame for those supply chain problems, COVID-19 saw a significant increase in homebound patients who turned to video games for entertainment. That increase in sales is waning as pandemic measures ease.
Comparing the most recent quarter to the same time last year, Nintendo sold 3.4 million fewer Switch consoles, a 22% decrease. Sales totaled over 111.08 million units overall. For the fiscal year, the business anticipates selling 21 million Switch gaming consoles. According to Nintendo, nearly 100 million people played the Switch during the previous year. The company maintained its 340 billion yen ($2.6 billion) earnings target for the fiscal year ending in March 2023.
