American culture has made coffee a significant constituent, and many individuals now get their daily brews from Starbucks. Because of its popularity, Starbucks locations can even be found next to one another in some places. But many Americans were using instant coffee in the latter half of the 20th century. The University of San Francisco students Gerald Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker intended to alter that. Alfred Peet, who had started a tiny coffee business in Berkeley, California, in 1966, served as an inspiration to the three guys.
The first Starbucks business, which was named after the fictional character Starbucks from Herman Melville's book Moby Dick, was established in Seattle in 1971 after Peet taught Baldwin, Siegl, and Bowker his roasting methodologies. According to the corporate website, this, like the mermaid emblem, alludes to the early coffee dealers' seafaring heritage. Over the following ten years, the founders opened four stores in Seattle; Siegl left the business in 1980. Howard Schultz, who oversaw one of Starbucks' suppliers, started working for the business in 1982. In 1983, after visiting coffee shops in Milan, Italy, Schultz was motivated to export the European tradition of sipping coffee to the US.
Schultz left Starbucks and founded a coffee shop called Il Giornale after Baldwin and Bowker refused to change their minds. As a result of its immediate success, Schultz had the capital and investors to purchase Starbucks in 1987 when Baldwin and Bowker decided to sell it. In just four years, there were more than 100 Starbucks locations in the US. The business started opening locations outside of North America in 1996, starting in Japan. According to its website, Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse chain in the world today with more than 32,000 locations in 80 nations.
