In line with a Google policy already in place, Twitter has announced that it will no longer permit advertisers on its platform that oppose the scientific consensus on climate change. In a statement explaining its new policy on Friday, the business said that "ads shouldn't detract from critical dialogues about the climate catastrophe." There was no indication that the modification would have an impact on the content that users publish on the social media platform, which, like Facebook, has been targeted by organizations looking to spread false information on climate change.

The Earth Day announcement came hours before the European Union approved a pact requiring major tech companies to thoroughly check their websites for hate speech, false information, and other harmful content. In the upcoming months, Twitter promised to publish additional details on how it intends to give its users' climate talks "reliable, authoritative context," including material from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. International negotiations to stop climate change are based on the reports of the U.N.-backed science group on the causes and impacts of climate change.

The company has a section on its website specifically devoted to climate issues and provided what it referred to as "pre-bunks" during the previous U.N. climate summit to dispel misconceptions about climate change.
