Even though tobacco sales can be a significant source of income, Walmart will no longer sell cigarettes in some of its stores. The news was initially reported Monday by the Wall Street Journal. Citing unnamed sources and store visits, it stated that some stores in California, Florida, Arkansas, and New Mexico were included on the list. Walmart is the biggest national retail chain to stop selling cigarettes, though it is not the first. Target stopped selling cigarettes in 1996, and CVS Health, a chain of pharmacies, followed suit in 2014.
Following the removal of tobacco items, CVS Health saw a decline in sales outside of the pharmacy for a few quarters. The firm had anticipated that the absence of tobacco products would reduce yearly earnings by 7 to 8 cents per share. Although CVS's overall income has increased every year, the company's healthcare products have been bolstered through several acquisitions and store renovations. In 2017, CVS Health acquired the health insurer Aetna. According to the business and specific market, Walmart will decide whether to discontinue selling cigarettes shop by store, the company announced on Monday.
“We are always looking at ways to meet our customers’ needs while still operating an efficient business,” Walmart said in a prepared statement. According to health officials, smoking is a factor in around one in five fatalities that occur in the United States each year. In 2019, Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walmart Inc. said it was exiting the vaping industry and will stop selling e-cigarettes in its stores and at Sam's Clubs. The decision was based on "growing federal, state, and local regulatory complexity," it was stated at the time.
