After a two-year ban on January 6, 2017, Facebook parent company Meta said it would reinstate former president Donald Trump's personal account. Nick Clegg, vice president of global affairs at Meta, said on January 25 that "The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying - the good, the bad, and the ugly - so that they can make informed choices."

According to Clegg, if Trump violated the guidelines once again, the offending material would be removed and he would receive another one- to a two-year ban, depending on the gravity of the offense. On January 7, 2021, Facebook banned Trump for endorsing those who participated in violence in the Capitol the day before. Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts will be restored "in the coming weeks," according to Meta. Trump has been relying on Truth Social, which he started after being blocked from Twitter, as he has been banned from the most widely used social media. Since Facebook banned him, he claimed, the company had "lost billions of dollars in value," and "such a thing should never again happen to a sitting President."

Following the insurrection, Trump was also banned by other social media platforms. Civil rights organizations criticized Meta's choice right away. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) praised the choice while Derrick Johnson, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, denounced it as an "example of putting profits over people's safety." Anthony D. Romero of the ACLU remarked, "Like it or not, President Trump is one of the country's leading political figures and the public has a strong interest in hearing his speech."
