Despite not being the hottest year on record globally, 2022 was at least among the top five or six, according to US government agencies. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimate that the worldwide average temperature for 2022 was 14.76 degrees Celsius, ranking sixth hottest on record, despite a La Niña, a cooling of the equatorial Pacific that lowers global average temperatures.
Due to data concerns, NOAA does not include the polar regions, but it soon will. NOAA predicted that 2022 would rank as the fifth warmest year if the Arctic and Antarctic are taken into account. The Arctic is warming three to four times more quickly than the rest. And Berkeley Earth, a nonprofit group of independent scientists, reported that 2022 was the fifth warmest year on record, but added that for 28 countries, including China, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany, and New Zealand, it was the hottest year on record. Additionally, US government scientists warned that "relentless" climate change brought on by the burning of coal, oil, and gas will likely result in record-breaking global temperatures shortly. According to UN research, the Earth's protective ozone layer is slowly but noticeably healing at a rate that will close the hole above Antarctica in around 43 years.
Every country in the world committed more than 35 years ago to stop the production of chemicals that harm the ozone layer in the Earth's atmosphere, which shields the globe from radiation related to crop damage and skin cancer. This resulted from the Montreal Protocol, a 1987 agreement that forbade a class of chemicals frequently found in refrigerants and aerosols. This is seen by many as one of the greatest ecological successes for humanity. The ozone layer in Antarctica might be reduced by up to 20% as a result of efforts to cool the planet by adding aerosols to the atmosphere to reflect sunlight, according to the report.
