Lawmaker Ranjeet Ranjan has proposed taxing couples planning lavish weddings in India.

If passed, the proposed marriage bill would set guidelines for wedding planning, such as limiting couples' expenditure to $7,500. Those who plan to go over the limit will have to pay a tax equal to 10% of their total costs. The money will then be used to organize weddings for families with difficult circumstances.

Along with the cost, the proposed guidelines would also set out the maximum number of wedding guests and the number of dishes served. According to Ranjan, setting limits on wedding preparations will prevent food waste.

Every year, the Indian government registers about 10 million marriages, each lasting more than a day. Ranjan says that regardless of their socioeconomic status, engaged couples believe they should have an extravagant wedding because they feel the need to impress their community. For example, one maid in Mumbai said her family borrowed more than $2,000 just to help with her brother's wedding.

Recently, a former legislator is said to have spent $75 million on her daughter's wedding, which highlighted international guest artists, high-tech invitations, and around 50,000 guests.  Other examples of extravagance at some weddings in India include a $30,000 luncheon, a wedding dress adorned with diamonds, and hiring an elephant to pick up the groom.

The trend of lavish weddings in the country is said to have started in 2004 when an Indian businessman celebrated his daughter's wedding in Versailles /v?r?sa?/, France. The total cost of the wedding is about 36 million USD. Ranjan hopes that with the new marriage bill, such overspending will be avoided.
