In response to inflation that reached 6.8% in July, Norway's central bank increased its key policy interest rate by 0.5%, noting that "inflation has been considerably higher than projected." The increase to 1.75% was greater than anticipated. It stated that "activity in the Norwegian economy is high" and that unemployment is extremely low, dropping more than anticipated last month to 3.2%.
“The rise in prices has been broad-based in recent months and may entail that inflation will remain high for longer than expected earlier,” Norges Bank said in a statement. “A faster rate rise now will reduce the risk of inflation becoming entrenched at a high level and the need for a sharper tightening of monetary policy further out.” It occurs at a time when central banks all over the world are raising interest rates significantly to fight decades-high inflation. In recent weeks, rate hikes of a half-point or more have been implemented by the U.S. Federal Reserve, Bank of England, and European Central Bank to keep the economy from reaching a recession.
On the other hand, the rise in interest rates and rising inflation may cool down the property market and reduce household consumption faster than currently anticipated, according to the central bank of Norway, which is not a member of the European Union. Based on the outlook and balance of risks, the bank said it will likely increase the policy rate further in September. "There is also a risk of a sharper slowdown in global growth," it added.
