Read the article below.

The success or failure of companies, public organizations, services, associations, sports teams, etc., often depends on the qualities of their leaders. A famous classification of manager's duties comes from Peter Drucker. Drucker suggests that a manager's job can be broken down into five tasks: planning (goal setting), organization, integration (motivation and communication), performance measurement, and people development.

• First, senior managers and directors set goals and decide how their organization can achieve or accomplish them.

• Second, they break work down into manageable activities and then into individual tasks.  They choose people to perform these tasks.

• Third, managers practice social skills of motivation and communication. They must also disseminate goals to those responsible for achieving them. They should turn teams into people responsible for carrying out individual tasks.

• Fourth, managers should measure employee performance, to see if the goals or targets set for the entire organization and for each individual member of the organization are being achieved.

• Finally, managers develop people – both themselves and their subordinates.

Although the tasks of a manager can be analyzed and classified in this fashion, management is not entirely scientific. There are management skills that have to be learned, but management is also a human skill. Some people are good at it, and others are not. Some people will be unable to put management techniques into practice. Others will have lots of techniques, but few good ideas. Excellent managers are quite rare.
