COMPARISON WITH ADJECTIVES:
In English, adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns, indicating their qualities. When comparing two or more things using adjectives, we use different forms depending on the degree of comparison: positive, comparative, and superlative.
1. Positive Degree:
This is the basic form of the adjective and is used to describe one thing without making any comparisons.
Examples:
- She is tall.
- The book is interesting.
2. Comparative Degree:
This form is used when you want to compare two things. It usually involves adding "-er" to the adjective, though some adjectives have irregular forms.
Examples:
- She is taller than her brother.
- This book is more interesting than the last one.
Irregular Comparative Adjectives:
- good → better
- bad → worse
- far → farther (for physical distance), further (for metaphorical distance)
- many/much → more
- little → less
3. Using "More" and "Most":
For longer adjectives (those with more syllables), instead of adding "-er" or "-est," you use "more" for the comparative degree.
Examples:
- The movie was more entertaining than I expected.
4. Comparative with "Than":
When making comparisons, the word "than" is used to introduce the second part of the comparison.
Examples:
- She is taller than him.
- This book is more interesting than the last one.
