POSITIVE:  I / They / We / You + HAVE BEEN + working / eating 

He / She / It + HAS BEEN + working / eating 

NEGATIVE:  I / They / We / You + HAVE NOT (haven’t) BEEN + working / eating 

He / She / It + HAS NOT (hasn’t) BEEN + working / eating 

QUESTION:  How long + HAVE + I / They / We / You + BEEN + working / eating ? 

How long + HAS + He / She / It + BEEN + working / eating ? 

For Example,

I have been living in Spain for ten years. 

She has been cleaning his room all day.

They have been doing the project for a long time. 

My sister has been baking the whole day. 

How long have you been driving?

UNFINISHED ACTIONS

To say how long for unfinished actions which started in the past and continue to the present. We often use this with ‘for’ and ‘since’.

For example, 

I have been studying English for five years. 

She has been working here since 2010. 

We have been waiting for the train for hours. 

For temporary habits or situations. The action in the past continues to the present in the same way as with use of the number 1 usage, but we don’t answer the questions about ‘how long’. Instead, we use a word like ‘recently’.

For example, 

I have been going to the gym a lot recently. 

They have been living with his father while they look for a house. 

I have been exercising a lot recently. 

FINISHED ACTIONS

Actions that have recently stopped and have a result. 

For example, 

I am so tired, that I have been studying. 

I am really exhausted, I’ve been running. 

It’s been raining so the road is wet.
