One and ones

הסבר באנגלית על One and ones, עם דוגמאות ו-5 שאלות תרגול לבדיקה עצמית. מתאים למתקדמים.

1. "One" as a Pronoun:

"One" can function as a pronoun to replace a previously mentioned noun. It is used to avoid repetition and create a more sophisticated sentence structure. This is often seen in formal writing and speech.

Example:

- Original: I prefer the blue car, and my friend prefers the red car.

- Revised: I prefer the blue car, and my friend prefers the red one. (one = car)

2. "Ones" as a Pronoun:

The term "ones" is the plural form of "one." It is used to refer to specific things or people in a sentence, replacing plural nouns to avoid repetition.

Example:

- Original: These books are interesting, and those books are boring.

- Revised: These books are interesting, and those ones are boring. (ones = books)

3. "One" and "Ones" with Determiners:

Both "one" and "ones" can be used with determiners (like articles and possessives) to further specify or describe the noun they refer to.

Example:

- Original: I want a new phone. Give me that phone.

- Revised: I want a new phone. Give me the new one. (one = phone)

4. Using Definite and Indefinite Articles:

When using "one" or "ones," the definite article "the" is commonly used before them to refer to specific nouns previously mentioned. The indefinite article "a/an" can also be used.

Example:

- Definite: I need a pair of shoes. The old ones are worn out.

- Indefinite: I need a new phone. Can you pass me an old one?

5. Demonstrative Pronouns with "One" and "Ones"

Demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those) can be combined with "one" and "ones" to specify or differentiate nouns in terms of proximity.

Example:

- This book is interesting, but that one is boring.

- These flowers are beautiful, and those ones are fragrant.

6. Using "Only" with "One" and "Ones"

The word "only" can be combined with "one" or "ones" to emphasize singularity or exclusivity.

Example:

- Only one of the cakes was left. The others were eaten.

- She is the only one who completed the assignment.

7. "One of" + Plural Noun:

When referring to a single item out of a group of plural items, "one of" is used before "ones."

Example:

- One of the students lost their book.

- One of the shirts is missing its button.

8. "One" as an Indefinite Pronoun:

"One" can also be used as an indefinite pronoun to refer to an unspecified person or thing, similar to the generic "someone" or "something."

Example:

- One never knows what the future holds.

- Can one really predict the outcome?
