Passive voice 2 (past)

In English grammar, the past tense is used to indicate actions or events that occurred in the past. The past tense has four forms: past simple, past progressive, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. In this lesson, we will discuss each of these forms in the passive voice.

1. Past Simple Passive Voice:

The past simple passive voice is used to describe an action that was performed in the past and the subject of the sentence is the receiver of the action. In the past simple passive voice, the verb form is "was/were + past participle."

Structure: Subject + was/were + past participle + (by + agent)

Examples:

- The letter was delivered by the postman yesterday.

- The car was repaired by the mechanic last week.

2. Past Progressive Passive Voice:

The past progressive passive voice is used to describe an action that was in progress in the past and the subject of the sentence is the receiver of the action. In the past progressive passive voice, the verb form is "was/were + being + past participle."

Structure: Subject + was/were + being + past participle + (by + agent)

Examples:

- The cake was being baked by the chef when the power went out.

- The car was being repaired by the mechanic when the customer arrived.

3. Past Perfect Passive Voice:

The past perfect passive voice is used to describe an action that was completed before another action in the past and the subject of the sentence is the receiver of the action. In the past perfect passive voice, the verb form is "had been + past participle."

Structure: Subject + had been + past participle + (by + agent)

Examples:

- The book had been read by the students before the test.

- The car had been repaired by the mechanic before the owner arrived.

4. Past Perfect Continuous Passive Voice:

The past perfect continuous passive voice is used to describe an action that was in progress before another action in the past and the subject of the sentence is the receiver of the action. In the past perfect continuous passive voice, the verb form is "had been + being + past participle."

Structure: Subject + had been + being + past participle + (by + agent)

Examples:

- The cake had been being baked by the chef for two hours before it was ready.

- The car had been being repaired by the mechanic for several hours before it was finished.
