Passive voice sentences with two objects are used when the action of the sentence is performed on two objects. The two objects can be a direct and an indirect object, or two direct objects. In passive voice, the sentence structure changes and the object becomes the subject, while the subject becomes the object.
Here are the structures for all tenses of verbs in passive voice sentences with two objects:
Present simple: Object 1 + am/is/are + past participle + object 2.
Example: They gave me a book. → I was given a book by them.
Present continuous: Object 1 + am/is/are being + past participle + object 2.
Example: They are giving me a book. → I am being given a book by them.
Present perfect: Object 1 + have/has been + past participle + object 2.
Example: They have given me a book. → I have been given a book by them.
Past simple: Object 1 + was/were + past participle + object 2.
Example: They gave me a book yesterday. → I was given a book by them yesterday.
Past continuous: Object 1 + was/were being + past participle + object 2.
Example: They were giving me a book when I arrived. → I was being given a book by them when I arrived.
Past perfect: Object 1 + had been + past participle + object 2.
Example: They had given me a book before I left. → I had been given a book by them before I left.
Here are some examples of passive voice sentences with two objects:
- They gave him a present. → He was given a present by them.
- She will show us the way. → The way will be shown to us by her.
- They have sent me an email. → An email has been sent to me by them.
- He was telling me a joke. → A joke was being told to me by him.
- They had booked a table for us. → A table had been booked for us by them.
