RELATIVE CLAUSES

A relative clause is a type of subordinate clause that provides additional information about a noun. It begins with a relative pronoun (such as "who," "whom," "whose," "which," or "that") or a relative adverb (such as "where," "when," or "why"). Relative clauses help to make sentences more descriptive and informative.

PREPOSITIONS IN RELATIVE CLAUSES

Prepositions are words that show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. They often indicate location, time, direction, or possession. When prepositions are used in relative clauses, they can introduce extra layers of complexity.

Here's a breakdown of how prepositions work in relative clauses:

1. Placement of the Preposition: The preposition can come before the relative pronoun or relative adverb that introduces the relative clause.

For example:

   - The book on which she is writing is very informative.

   - The city where he grew up is now a popular tourist destination.

2. Preposition + Which/Whom: When the relative pronoun "which" is used, the preposition often comes before it. The same applies to "whom" (though "whom" is more formal and less commonly used in modern English).

   - The car in which I was traveling broke down.

   - The person to whom I was speaking is an expert.

3. Preposition Stranding: In informal English, prepositions can be "stranded" at the end of the relative clause. This is more common in spoken languages.

   - The movie we were talking about is the one I want to watch.

4. Possessive Pronouns and Prepositions: When the relative clause indicates possession, the possessive pronoun (like "whose") can be followed by a preposition.

      - This is the artist whose work we were discussing.

5. Prepositions with Time and Place: Prepositions indicating time or place can also be used in relative clauses to provide additional information about when or where something happened.

   - The day on which the event occurred was memorable.

   - The house where we met is now abandoned.

Remember that the choice of prepositions and their placement can significantly affect the meaning and clarity of the sentence. It's important to use the appropriate preposition based on the context.

Example Sentence: The book about which you were asking is on the top shelf.

In this sentence, "about" is the preposition, "which" is the relative pronoun, and the relative clause "about which you were asking" provides more information about the book's subject.
