REPORTED SPEECH
Reported speech, also known as indirect speech, is a way of reporting or paraphrasing someone's words or statements. It is used when we want to communicate what someone else said without using their exact words. In reported speech, we usually change the tense, pronouns, and other elements to match the reporting context. Here is a detailed explanation of the key aspects of reported speech:
1. Reporting Verb: In reported speech, we begin with a reporting verb (e.g., say, tell, ask, explain) followed by a reporting clause. The reporting verb can be in various tenses, such as present, past, or future, depending on the context.
Example:
- Direct speech: "I am going to the store," she said.
- Reported speech: She said that she was going to the store.
2. Tense Changes: When transforming direct speech to reported speech, the verb tenses often change. The general rule is to shift the verb tenses back in time. The tense changes are as follows:
a. Present Simple ? Past Simple
- Direct speech: "I like chocolate," he said.
- Reported speech: He said that he liked chocolate.
b. Present Continuous ? Past Continuous
- Direct speech: "I am reading a book," she said.
- Reported speech: She said that she was reading a book.
c. Present Perfect ? Past Perfect
- Direct speech: "I have finished my homework," he said.
- Reported speech: He said that he had finished his homework.
d. Past Simple ? Past Perfect
- Direct speech: "I visited Paris last year," she said.
- Reported speech: She said that she had visited Paris the previous year.
e. Will/Would ? Would
- Direct speech: "I will help you," he said.
- Reported speech: He said that he would help me.
f. Can ? Could
- Direct speech: "I can swim," she said.
- Reported speech: She said that she could swim.
Note: The tense changes may vary depending on the reporting verb and the context of the sentence.
3. Pronoun Changes: When shifting from direct speech to reported speech, pronouns often change to match the new speaker or context. The general pronoun changes are as follows:
a. First person pronouns (I, we) ? Change based on the speaker
- Direct speech: "I love this song," she said.
- Reported speech: She said that she loved that song.
b. Second person pronouns (you) ? Change based on the speaker
- Direct speech: "You should study harder," he said.
- Reported speech: He told me that I should study harder.
c. Third person pronouns (he, she, they) ? May or may not change based on the context
- Direct speech: "She is a doctor," he said.
- Reported speech: He said that she was a doctor.
Note: When the reported speech refers to a general truth or fact, no pronoun change is necessary.
4. Adverb and Time Changes: Adverbs of time and place may also need to be changed when transforming direct speech to reported speech.
- Direct speech: "I will meet you here tomorrow," she said.
- Reported speech: She said that she would meet me there the next day.
Note: Adverbs of time and place often change according to the context and their relationship to the reported speech.
5. Other Changes: There are a few other changes that may occur in reported speech, such as changes in modal verbs, adjectives, and possessive pronouns.
- Direct speech: "I can't come to the party," he said.
- Reported speech: He said that he couldn't come to the party.
- Direct speech: "It's my book," she said.
- Reported speech: She said that it was her book.
These are the key aspects of the reported speech. However, it's important to note that the rules can be complex, and there are exceptions depending on the context and specific reporting verbs used.
