Have you ever lied and claimed to be older? Your eyes may reveal the truth, but perhaps not in the way you think. Researchers have created a computer model that uses photographs of your retinas, the tissue in the back of your eyes, to estimate your age.
Researchers used photos of retinas from more than 11,000 people in the UK Biobank to train a computer model in a study that was published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. A database called the UK Biobank has health data on more than 500,000 British citizens between the ages of 40 and 69. With an average discrepancy of 3.55 years, the researchers unearthed that the computer model could reasonably accurately infer people's ages from their retinas. They also unearthed what they termed a "retinal age gap": the difference between an individual's actual age in years and the estimated age of their eyes.
There were some persons with eyes that appeared older than their actual age, or a higher gap, and others with eyes that appeared younger. However, there was no conclusive verification linking the retinal age gap to deaths from cardiovascular disease or cancer. Our retinas are already scrutinized by doctors for signs of illnesses ranging from cancer to excessive blood pressure. According to the research, it's possible that in the near future, they'll be able to examine our retinal age gap to detect other issues.
