A school in China has started a new program that enables students to borrow points in order to pass tests. A "grades bank" program was developed by Nanjing Number One High School in China to reduce test anxiety. According to the school, a few points can make the difference between a passing and a failing grade. This program allows a student who failed an exam to pass by using points from other school assignments.
A teacher at the school claims that the difference between a passing and a failing grade may have a significant effect on students' physical and mental health. It has been said that the pass-or-fail attitude has a negative impact on students, sometimes leading them to give up or cheat. Through the grades bank, the school's director intends to address this problem. She claims that, unlike conventional testing, exams should help students learn rather than hinder their progress.
There are several prerequisites for the project. Only a specific number of points may be borrowed by a student, and that student must act as the borrower's guarantor. Then, borrowed points can be repaid by performing better on subsequent exams or putting in extra effort in the classroom. However, the guarantor may intervene to clean the record of his or her classmate if the student is unable to repay the borrowed points by the conclusion of the semester. Otherwise, the student will not be permitted to borrow again.
